Expressing serious concern over the growing threat of cyber fraud, the Supreme Court has observed that online scammers who prey on innocent people are like “parasites” and should face strict legal action.
The remarks came while a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice V. Mohan was hearing a petition seeking the consolidation of multiple FIRs registered in different States. During the proceedings, the court highlighted the widespread impact of cyber crimes and said such offenders exploit unsuspecting investors and citizens for financial gain.
The apex court noted that victims of cyber fraud are spread across the country and emphasized that society’s interests demand firm action against those involved in such activities. The Bench declined to combine the FIRs and instead advised the petitioner to seek appropriate remedies before the concerned High Courts.
The judges observed that cyber criminals operate in a highly organized manner and often target vulnerable individuals, causing significant financial losses. According to the court, keeping such offenders behind bars is necessary to protect public confidence and deter similar crimes.
The Supreme Court has repeatedly expressed concern over the rapid rise in digital frauds and online scams in recent months. Earlier, it had underlined the need for stronger coordination among investigative agencies and stricter mechanisms to tackle cyber-enabled crimes.
Authorities have also been focusing on enhancing awareness and strengthening cyber security measures to protect citizens from financial fraud. Experts believe that coordinated efforts between law enforcement agencies and public awareness campaigns are essential to combat the growing menace.
