The United States has formally charged Lawrence Bishnoi and his close aide Goldy Brar with ordering the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.
The Killing That Shook India-Canada Ties
Nijjar, a 45-year- Canadian citizen was shot dead by two gunmen outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia on June 18 2023. He had campaigned for the creation of a Sikh homeland called Khalistan and had been designated a terrorist by New Delhi. His killing triggered a diplomatic crisis between India and Canada.
Charges Against Bishnoi and Brar
Bishnoi directed the assassination operation from inside a jail cell using smuggled mobile phones. He allegedly provided a co-conspirator with a photograph of Nijjar and addresses linked to him. Goldy Brar is alleged to have directed the organisations operations across North America.
A Coordinated International Crackdown
The charges against Bishnoi and Brar are part of a law enforcement action called “Operation Hardball. “This operation was carried out jointly by agencies in the United States, Canada and Europe. A total of 37 defendants were charged across three indictments. They are connected to India-based organised crime groups accused of racketeering targeted killings, extortion and large-scale narcotics trafficking.
Charges & Alleged Criminal Activities
The federal indictment charges Bishnoi, Brar and others with racketeering conspiracy and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. Investigators allege that Bishnoi had delegated day-to-day control of parts of his criminal enterprise to trusted lieutenants.
Bishnoi Behind Bars, Brar Still at Large
Lawrence Bishnoi has been imprisoned in India since 2015. Goldy Brar remains at large. Is actively being sought by law enforcement. A federal arrest warrant was issued for Brar in the US District Court for the Central District of California.
Official Reactions
The FBI unveiled a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to Brars arrest. Law enforcement agencies across the US, Canada, Europe and Asia remain determined to target and dismantle these organisations.

Canadian police had previously. Charged four Indian nationals in connection with Nijjars killing. The diplomatic relationship between India and Canada has seen improvement in recent months.
