Attack Targets Security Checkpoint Near Afghan Border
At least 15 people, including soldiers, police personnel and a government official were killed after militants drove an explosives-laden vehicle into a security checkpoint in Pakistans northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attack happened overnight in the Tank district, an area near the border that has long been a center for militant activity.
According to Pakistans media the dead included 12 soldiers, two police officers and an official from the forest department. The checkpoint was being manned by police personnel when the attack happened. The military called the dead as having been killed while defending the country a term it has used times before after attacks on security forces.
How the Attack Happened
Officials said the militants first tried to break into the checkpoint but failed. After being engaged by army personnel at the post the attackers instead drove the explosives- vehicle into the checkpoints outer wall causing a big explosion. The Pakistani Taliban, also called Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan said they did this attack. They said four suicide bombers were involved in attacking the military-police post.
After the attack Pakistani forces started a counter-operation in the area. This reportedly killed 12 militants. While most reports say the total number of dead from the attack is 15 one international outlet said the number was higher at 27 including soldiers, police and attackers.
