US Sanctions Four India-Based Companies Over Iranian Petroleum Imports

The United States has imposed sanctions on four India-based companies for importing petroleum and petrochemical products from Iran as announced in a press release by the U.S. State Department on Monday, August 25.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a broader sanctions push, named “Operation Economic Outcast,” which aims to block all sources of revenue for Iran. He described it as a campaign to sever Irans financial lifelines and said the United States has also told other countries to cut economic ties with Tehran or face retaliation. This move broadens the risk of sanctions for any entities—whether countries, businesses or organisations—that keep doing business with Iran.

Among the four India-based companies facing action is customs broker Portease Partners LLP and its partners Indian nationals Indrismiya Ashrafmiya Sheikh and Harish Ramachandra Rangi who the State Department said helped import shipments of Iranian petrochemical products. The other firms named are Sadashiva Overseas, PP Softtech (with its director Prashant Garg) and Prakrutees Infra Impex. According to the release Sadashiva Overseas imported Iranian-origin petroleum products about $69 million from various companies while PP Softtech and Prakrutees Infra each imported petroleum products worth $25 million.

The companies were designated for ” engaging in a significant transaction for the purchase, acquisition, sale, transport or marketing of petroleum or petroleum products from Iran ” the State Department said.

This is not the time Indian entities have faced such action— the United States has periodically sanctioned Indian firms and individuals over alleged Iranian oil trade in recent years reflecting Washingtons sustained pressure campaign, on countries and companies that do business with Tehran.

Note: This report is based on the U.S. State Departments press release and PTI/wire reporting. Whether the named companies will respond publicly to the sanctions remains to be seen.
