India has joined the United States and 24 other nations in an effort to guide the creation and use of next‑generation 6G telecom networks the US Department of Commerce announced on Monday, September 7.

How the Agreement Came About
The agreement was finished after a meeting between US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and India’s Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada during the G20 Innovation Ministerial. In a post on X the US Department of Commerce said, “Today we are pleased to announce that India has joined the U.S. And 24 other countries in the effort to ensure that next‑generation networks reflect our shared security interests strengthen our competitiveness and drive innovation in 6G.” The initiative now brings together 26 countries, including India and the U.S.
Part of a Wider G20 Innovation Ministerial
Prasada led the delegation at the G20 Innovation Ministers’ meeting on September 1‑2 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The meeting finished with a G20 Innovation Ministerial Statement that highlighted how emerging technologies can drive prosperity, productivity and opportunity.
Broader India‑US Tech Cooperation Discussed
In his one‑to‑one talk with Lutnick Prasada said both sides shared ideas on boosting cooperation in semiconductors, AI and data centres. He also urged US investment under India’s ISM 2.0 semiconductor mission suggested a stronger AI partnership between the two nations and explained India’s approach to AI safeguards. On X Prasada wrote, “Semiconductors. AI. Data centres. These are building blocks of the emerging digital economy ” adding that both sides had looked at ways to deepen real collaboration.
Why It Matters
According to India’s Ministry of Electronics and IT the talks during the visit highlighted India’s growing role in shaping the technology and innovation agenda. India reaffirmed the commitment of India to building partnerships that turn advances in AI, semiconductors, digital public infrastructure (DPI) and robotics into economic growth and a better quality of life for India’s people.
