The National Highways Authority of India has taken action against some of its officials. This happened after a big hole appeared on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. The expressway is very new it was opened two and a half months ago by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

What Happened

The problem with the road was found near Hathi Karoda village in Shamli district, Uttar Pradesh. This was after it rained heavily in the area. People made videos of the hole in the road. They were shared on social media. You can see cars losing control on the damaged road. One person who made a video said that four or five cars were affected. Two of the cars got their wheels bent after hitting the hole.

The National Highways Authority of India said that they found the problem with the road during a check. They fixed the road away. They also said that they could not finish some work on the road because of a problem with the people who live in the area.

NHAI’s Explanation

According to the authority’s official statement, the road caved in because rainwater accumulated at the location following heavy rainfall, compounded by delays in commissioning a permanent cross-drainage system at the site. NHAI specifically pointed to a balancing culvert — designed to safely channel rainwater across the carriageway — which it said could not be commissioned due to resistance from local residents, who had reportedly been using the culvert opening as a route for vehicle movement.

Officials Suspended, Notices Issued

Amid mounting criticism, NHAI issued show-cause notices to the Project Director, the Authority Engineer, and the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contractor associated with the affected stretch. In a more immediate disciplinary step, the Team Leader of the Authority Engineer and the Project Manager of the contractor were suspended with immediate effect, pending further inquiry into the lapses that led to the cave-in.

Political Fallout

The incident quickly became a flashpoint politically. The Congress party seized on the visuals, alleging that the rapid deterioration pointed to “rampant corruption and embezzlement of funds” in the expressway’s construction. In a post on social media, the party argued that the episode was not isolated, pointing to what it described as a broader pattern of crumbling public infrastructure across the country — from bridges and highways to water tanks, railway stations, and airport roofs — and used the episode to criticise the central government’s infrastructure record. Congress spokesperson Dr Shama Mohamed was quoted questioning the project directly, asking what more proof of corruption was needed. The Aam Aadmi Party also joined in criticising the project.
As of the latest reports, the government and NHAI have not issued a direct, detailed public rebuttal to the corruption allegations specifically, beyond their technical explanation attributing the damage to drainage issues and local obstruction. No formal investigation into corruption or financial irregularities in the project’s construction has been announced.
