Dehradun: An alleged paper leak at Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU) has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the state’s higher education examination system. According to the university’s inquiry, question papers for two B.Tech subjects were allegedly leaked to students before the examinations. An assistant professor has been arrested in connection with the case, while the university has cancelled both examinations.
What Is the Case About?
According to the university administration, concerns were raised over a possible breach of confidentiality in the examinations for Machine Learning for Internet of Things and Electromagnetic Field Theory. The preliminary investigation alleges that the external paper setter responsible for preparing the question papers shared important questions with students through WhatsApp and other channels before the examinations. Several of these questions reportedly appeared in the actual examination papers.
Questions Raised Over the Second Paper as Well
During the investigation, it also emerged that the Electromagnetic Field Theory question paper prepared by the accused may have reached students under suspicious circumstances. In view of these concerns, the university cancelled both examinations as a precautionary measure to ensure that no student was unfairly disadvantaged.
University Takes Strict Action
The UTU administration lodged a police complaint against the accused assistant professor. Following the investigation, the police arrested the accused. The university has also barred the individual from all examination-related responsibilities for the next seven years. Additionally, the institution concerned has been issued a warning over alleged lapses in maintaining examination confidentiality.
Re-Examinations Scheduled for August
The university has announced that both cancelled examinations will be conducted again during the third week of August 2026. All affiliated institutions have been instructed to inform students in a timely manner and ensure adequate preparation for the fresh examinations.
Vice-Chancellor’s Assurance
The Vice-Chancellor stated that maintaining the transparency and confidentiality of the examination system remains the university’s highest priority. The examination process will be reviewed, and necessary security measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
A Bigger Question Over the Education System
The incident extends beyond a single university and has sparked a broader debate about the credibility and security of examination systems. Experts believe that without stronger digital monitoring, stricter confidentiality protocols, and greater accountability, it will be difficult to completely prevent such incidents.
