A political controversy has intensified in Uttarakhand after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Mahendra Bhatt apologized for remarks he made concerning students. The issue gained momentum after a video of his statement went viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism from the Opposition.
Controversy Over Viral Statement
The controversy erupted after a video of Bhatt’s remarks, made in the context of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over the NEET paper leak issue, surfaced online and was linked by critics to students protesting examination irregularities. Following the viral video, the Congress accused Bhatt of using objectionable and abusive language against students and demanded that he issue a public apology.
Mahendra Bhatt Issues Apology
Responding to the criticism, Bhatt said in a social media post that if any word or the way he phrased his statement had inadvertently hurt anyone’s sentiments, he regretted it and offered his apology. He clarified that it was not his intention to hurt anyone’s feelings.
Congress Targets BJP
Uttarakhand Congress president Ganesh Godiyal said Bhatt’s language reflected his attitude toward students and the people of the state, and warned that if Bhatt did not apologize, students and youths would stage an indefinite sit-in protest outside his residence.
BJP Defends Its State President
State BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said Bhatt’s remarks were being misrepresented and taken out of context. In a video statement, Bhatt himself said the Opposition was misrepresenting what he had said and asserted he had not used the language attributed to him. Separately, BJP leaders noted that the Uttarakhand government has maintained a policy of zero tolerance toward paper leaks, pointing to a case at Uttarakhand Technical University where an assistant professor was arrested over an alleged leaked question paper.
