A tense situation unfolded on Friday in Satoli Gram Panchayat of Ramgarh Block, Nainital district, after a group of laborers who had reportedly arrived in search of work were accused of allegedly harassing local women and young girls. Following the incident, villagers detained two of the accused, blackened their faces as a form of protest, and handed them over to the police. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.
What Happened?
According to available information, five to ten laborers had arrived in Satoli village looking for work. It is alleged that some of them behaved inappropriately with local women and young girls and were involved in acts of harassment.
When local residents objected, the accused allegedly attempted to assault some of the villagers, escalating tensions in the area.
Angered by the incident, villagers and local women caught two of the accused. As a symbolic act of protest, they blackened the men’s faces before informing the police, who later took both individuals into custody.
What Did the Police Say?
According to Bhowali Police Station in-charge Prakash Mehra, police reached the spot immediately after receiving information and took both accused into custody.
Preliminary findings suggest that the laborers had come to the village seeking employment and that some among them have been accused of harassing local women. Police stated that further legal action will be taken after receiving a formal complaint and completing the investigation in accordance with the law.
