Tamil Nadu Police on Tuesday took DMK leader and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin into custody from his Chennai residence over a complaint alleging he made a remark referencing actor Trisha during a public address. Police personnel were deployed outside Stalins residence before he was escorted away amid protests from DMK workers.
What Happened
The controversy arose during a DMK protest over the Cauvery water dispute in Thanjavur on Monday, where Stalin was addressing the crowd and criticising Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijays handling of the water-sharing issue alleging Tamil Nadu had not received its share of Cauvery water. During his speech a person in the crowd repeatedly called out actor Trishas name, to which Stalin responded with a remark that was widely interpreted by listeners and media as a reference to the actor.
The Complaint
A case was registered against Stalin under legal sections following a complaint reportedly filed by the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) which alleged that Stalin had made “offensive double-meaning remarks and vulgar innuendos” targeting a prominent female public figure after being prompted by the crowds chant.
Stalins Response
Stalin, who was seen smiling as he was taken away by police described the action as a “joke”. Said he would contest the matter legally.
Political Reactions
Several BJP leaders condemned the remark. Demanded that Stalin issue a public apology to Trisha. The DMK in response described the controversy as motivated accusing rival parties of using the episode to divert public attention from the ongoing Cauvery water dispute.
