An Indian-flagged ship sank in the Red Sea near Yemen after being hit by a projectile Indias Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed. All 14 people on board including 13 citizens were saved without any injuries.
What Happened
Sonowal said the ship was called the sailing vessel (MSV) Faize Noore Oliya and that it sank after being hit by a projectile near Yemeni waters. “India strongly rejects this attack on the ship ” Sonowal said on social media. He added that the safety of sailors is very important to the government.
Crew Rescued and Brought to Safety
All 14 people on the ship. 13 From India and one from Yemen. Were saved by the Yemeni Coast Guard. Taken to the Port of Mokha. Sonowal said he asked the Directorate General of Shipping to take actions to protect sailors in the area and to give them all the help they need. Indias Ministry of External Affairs said its embassy in Riyadh is watching the situation and working with leaders.
Who Is Responsible?
Yemeni leaders have blamed the Houthi movement, which is supported by Iran and this group has attacked ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. However no one has said for sure who did this attack. The Houthis have used boats with explosives. Controlled by remote in attacks near Yemen but that does not mean they did this attack on the Faize Noore Oliya. It is also not clear if the ship was going to or coming from a port or if it was connected to the routes that the Houthis have attacked.
