What Happened
Punjabi social media influencer Manjeet Kaur, 28, has died nearly two months after sustaining severe burn injuries in an attack in Punjab. She passed away on August 26 at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, where she had been undergoing treatment for close to 54 days. A postmortem examination conducted after her death revealed that she was around seven weeks pregnant at the time.
Kaur, a divorcee, is survived by her seven-year-old son, who lives with her former husband.
How the Attack Occurred
According to a complaint filed by Kaur’s mother, Kanta Devi, two acquaintances of Kaur — identified as Shubhi and Pinda — allegedly called her to Sector 34 in Chandigarh, near a liquor shop, during the night of July 3 into July 4. The complaint alleges the two assaulted her at that location before forcing her into a vehicle and taking her to a forested area near Morinda, Punjab.
Police say Kaur was then allegedly tied to a mulberry tree at the site and set on fire. Another acquaintance of hers reportedly arrived at the location shortly after and managed to extinguish the flames using a blanket, an intervention that likely kept her alive for the following weeks of treatment.
Investigation Underway
Police are now investigating the circumstances of the alleged abduction and attack, and continue efforts to trace the two named suspects, who remain absconding. Authorities are also examining questions that have been raised over delays in recording Kaur’s statement, along with the coordination between Chandigarh and Punjab police teams handling the case.
