What Happened
The Supreme Court has set up a committee to look into the violence that happened during the student protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and other places across the country last month. This committee has five members. It will work independently to find out what really happened. The Supreme Court judges, including the Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana made this decision on Wednesday. They did this after they said they wanted to set up such a committee the day
The Court said that from the beginning they knew that something was not right and that is why they wanted to investigate. They wanted to find out if the police used much force against the students and if the students were violent against the police.
Who Is on the Committee?
The committee will be led by a Supreme Court judge named Justice R. Subhash Reddy. The other members are:
- Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha
- Former Delhi High Court judge Justice Shalinder Kaur
- Former CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla
- Retired Meghalaya Director General of Police Dr. L.R. Bishnoi
This committee has people who’re good at investigating and people who know about the law. This will help them find out what really happened.
What Will the Committee Look Into?
The Court wants the committee to look into two things. First they want to know if the police used much force against the students. Second they want to know if the students were violent against the police. The committee will look into things like:
- The police using pellet guns, electric batons and tear gas against the students
- If the police treated women students badly
- If the police were wearing their uniforms and name tags when they were dealing with the students
- If the police were watching the students closely
- If the police used the right methods to control the crowd
- If the students who were hurt got the medical help they needed
The Court also wants the committee to look at videos and other recordings of what happened during the protest on July 20. They want the committee to write a report about what they find out about the police using too much force and the women students being treated badly.
Background to the Case
All of this started when some students protested against the paper leak controversy. The protest was organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). It turned violent. The police used batons and tear gas to stop the students. The Court said that the police cannot use much force just because there is a protest. The students have the right to protest peacefully.
The government and police said that some of the students who protested had records and that they were violent. The police said they found than 2,800 “anti-social elements” who they think were responsible for the violence.
The Court also said that the term ” antecedents” only applies to people who have done very serious crimes. This means that the states can close or withdraw cases against students who did not do anything
What the Court Said
The judges said that this is a matter and they want to get to the bottom of it. That is why they set up the committee. They think the committee will listen to what the students have to say and look into their complaints. The committee will not just look into what one side says they will look into what both sides say.

Now that the committee is set up they will start looking into what happened. They will look at videos and recordings. They will talk to the students and the police. They will write a report, about what they find out about the police using too much force and the women students being treated badly. The committee will do an investigation and find out what really happened during the student protests. The Supreme Court and the students are waiting to see what the committee finds out.
