New Delhi/Glasgow, July 26, 2026: In a major achievement for Indian sports, star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has won the gold medal in the women’s 48kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. Competing at the SEC Armadillo, she lifted a total of 190kg, including 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, setting new Commonwealth and Games records in the process. This victory not only marks another milestone in her illustrious career but also earns India its first gold medal of the Games.

India’s First Gold at Commonwealth Games 2026
Mirabai finished a commanding 22kg clear of the rest of the field. Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed the silver medal with a total of 168kg, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry settled for bronze with 167kg. Her dominant performance ensured India opened its medal account at Glasgow 2026 in style.
Third Straight Commonwealth Gold, Fourth Medal Overall
This triumph is another remarkable achievement in Mirabai Chanu’s career. She has now won three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals — following her victories at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022 — taking her overall Commonwealth Games medal tally to four. She had earlier claimed silver in the 48kg category at Glasgow 2014, before striking gold in the same category at Gold Coast 2018 with a Games-record 196kg, and then moving to the 49kg division to win gold at Birmingham 2022 with a Games-record 201kg.
A Career Marked by Consistency
Across four editions of the Commonwealth Games spanning more than a decade, Mirabai has stood on the podium every single time — a rare feat of consistency in elite weightlifting. The victory further cements her legacy as one of India’s greatest weightlifters.
Strong Comeback After a Difficult Start
The competition did not begin smoothly for Mirabai. She failed to register successful lifts in her opening attempts in both the snatch and the clean and jerk, missing her first attempt at 82kg in the snatch.
Dominant Recovery to Secure Gold
Displaying the composure and determination of a seasoned champion, she bounced back brilliantly in her subsequent attempts and took complete control of the competition. She recovered to clear 82kg on her second attempt before improving to 85kg on her final lift to set the new Commonwealth record. With a total lift of 190kg, she comfortably secured the gold medal.
Speaking after her win, Mirabai Chanu expressed her happiness at delivering for the country, saying she felt pressure going into the competition but was determined to perform well for the Indian weightlifting team, calling it an extremely proud moment to win her third gold and fourth overall Commonwealth Games medal.
Focus Now Shifts to the Asian Games
Despite achieving another historic success at the Commonwealth Games, Mirabai’s attention is now firmly on the upcoming Asian Games. Her current form and consistent performances indicate that she remains one of India’s strongest medal contenders on the international stage.
A Proud Moment for India
Mirabai Chanu’s latest achievement is more than just another gold medal — it is the result of years of dedication, discipline, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Once again, she has demonstrated her dominance in Indian weightlifting and reinforced her reputation as one of the country’s most dependable sporting icons.
Elsewhere on Day 3 of the Games, India’s weightlifting campaign continued to gather momentum, with Chanambam Rishikanta Singh winning silver in the men’s 60kg event with a combined lift of 264kg.
