Uttarakhand’s world-renowned Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, often referred to as the “Kumbh of the Himalayas,” will now be held in 2027 instead of 2026. The pilgrimage, originally scheduled for 2026, has been postponed by one year due to adverse weather conditions, increasing risks in high-altitude regions, and incomplete preparations.
Why Has the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra Been Postponed?
According to the Raj Jat Committee, the traditional auspicious dates for the pilgrimage fall in September. In recent years, the Himalayan region has witnessed increasingly unpredictable weather during this period, including sudden snowfall, heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and rapidly changing weather conditions. Given these challenges, ensuring the safety of thousands of pilgrims has been identified as the highest priority.
In addition, several infrastructure and route development projects could not be completed on time due to natural disasters. Considering these circumstances, the committee unanimously decided to postpone the pilgrimage until 2027.
A Historic Pilgrimage Held Once Every 12 Years
The Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra is one of Uttarakhand’s most significant religious and cultural pilgrimages. Covering approximately 280 kilometers, the challenging Himalayan trek takes devotees through remote villages, alpine meadows (bugyals), and high-altitude mountain trails before culminating at Homkund.
The pilgrimage symbolically represents the ceremonial farewell of Goddess Nanda Devi from her maternal home to her divine abode at Kailash. It is regarded as a living celebration of Uttarakhand’s rich traditions, folk culture, and spiritual heritage.
Pilgrim Safety Remains the Top Priority
The organizing committee emphasized that the pilgrimage is not merely a religious event but also a major logistical undertaking involving thousands of devotees. Therefore, the yatra will only be conducted once weather conditions, travel routes, and essential facilities are fully prepared and considered safe.
The Uttarakhand government is also investing in infrastructure development and religious tourism projects to improve roads, facilities, and safety measures, ensuring that the upcoming Raj Jat Yatra is conducted in a more secure and well-organized manner.
