Rhiya Ahir, who was seen blocking a police van during student protests in Mumbai last week, has approached the cyber police alleging online harassment following the incident.
The Viral Moment at Shivaji Park
In a viral image from the rain-soaked protest at Shivaji Park in Dadar on July 22, Ahir was seen standing before a police van carrying detained young protesters. The photograph, showing her in a grey hoodie firmly blocking the vehicle, emerged as one of the most striking images from the Mumbai protests. Ahir said she had noticed several protesters, including women, inside the van and had tried to help one of them get out before being stopped by police personnel. She then stood in front of the vehicle and demanded the release of the detained protesters.
Complaint to Cyber Police
In her complaint, Ahir alleged that she became the target of a coordinated online campaign involving defamatory content, manipulated images, and abusive language after her protest photo went viral. She submitted screenshots, URLs, and other digital evidence to support her complaint, alleging that multiple social media accounts systematically circulated harmful content targeting her.
Ahir’s Response to the Backlash
Speaking publicly about the criticism she has faced, Ahir said she did not attend the protest with the intention of gaining online attention but felt compelled to act after witnessing what she described as an injustice. She said she remains firm in her position despite the trolling, adding that she has received significant support alongside the criticism.
