Major Accident in Nainital: Uncontrolled Taxi Falls into 40-Meter Deep Gorge, Two Seriously Injured Including Driver, SDRF Conducts Rescue

A painful road accident came to light on Thursday in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. In the Jyolikote area, a taxi lost control and fell into an approximately 40-meter-deep gorge. Screams and panic broke out at the spot following the accident. Upon receiving the information, the police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team reached the scene, and after a rescue operation lasting about an hour, safely extricated all the injured and transported them to the hospital.

How Did the Accident Happen?

According to reports, Sangram Singh, a resident of Haldwani, was driving the taxi. Nikhilendra Singhal, a resident of Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, had come to visit Nainital with his friends Siddharth Pratap Singh, Nikhil Tripathi, Aditya Tripathi, Siddhant Singh, and Adarsh Mishra. On Thursday, all the tourists were returning.

It is reported that near the Jyolikote Number One Bend, due to high speed on a gentle curve, the driver lost control of the taxi. After colliding with stones placed on the roadside, the taxi plummeted directly into a nearly 40-meter-deep gorge.

Two People Seriously Injured

Taxi driver Sangram Singh and tourist Nikhilendra Singhal were severely injured in the accident, while the other passengers sustained minor injuries. Hearing the cries for help after the crash, local residents informed the police.

SDRF and Police Launched Rescue Operation

Upon receiving the news, the police and SDRF team arrived at the spot. After a rescue operation that lasted nearly an hour, everyone trapped in the gorge was safely brought out. Following this, the injured were dispatched to Haldwani Hospital via 108 Ambulance for treatment.

According to police officials, preliminary investigations suggest high speed as the primary reason for losing control of the vehicle. However, the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. The administration has appealed to drivers on hilly routes to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits.
