Switzerland played a good game to beat Algeria 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32. They played this game on Thursday at BC Place in Vancouver. This win means Switzerland will play in the Round of 16.
Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scored the goals that helped Switzerland win. The game was not very exciting. It was interesting to watch because of the tactics both teams used.
A Tactical Chess Match
The game was more interesting because of the history between the two teams coaches. Algerias coach Vladimir Petkovic used to be the coach of the Switzerland team from 2014 to 2021. This showed in how the game was played. Switzerlands coach Murat Yakin had a plan to handle Algerias early pressure and then quickly counterattack. And it worked very well.
The first goal for Switzerland was an example of how to play simple and effective football. They got the ball back in their half and then quickly moved it to Johan Manzambi on the left side. Manzambi did a job getting past several Algeria defenders and then set up Breel Embolo, who scored easily in the 10th minute.
Algeria had some chances too before Switzerland scored. Their captain Riyad Mahrez did a move to get the ball to Houssem Aouar but Aouar missed the shot and Switzerland was lucky to not be in trouble early on.
Second Half: Ndoye Seals It
Algeria was behind 1-0 at halftime but they still thought they could tie the game and keep playing in the World Cup. However things got worse for them right after the second half started. Algerias defense made a mistake. Switzerland got another chance to score. Dan Ndoye got the ball outside the box took a touch and then shot a precise and low ball through many players and into the goal making it 2-0 for Switzerland just a minute into the second half.
With a two-goal lead Switzerland went back to their plan: they let Algeria have the ball and waited for chances to counterattack quickly. Algeria was careful not to push many players forward because they did not want to get caught out again.
Algerias Frustrating Response
Algerias coach Petkovic tried to change things by bringing in players like Anis Hadj Moussa and Riyad Mahrez to try and get a goal. Mahrez had a chance. Shot the ball straight at a defender, which showed how frustrating the game was for Algerias offense.
As the game went on some players got angry. There were some yellow cards given. Algerias Fares Chaibi got a card in the first half and Hicham Boudaoui got one in the 72nd minute. Algeria was getting more and more frustrated as they were behind by two goals.
A Late Scare, But No Change in Outcome
Switzerland used the part of the game to manage their lead and bring in some new players like Noah Okafor, Fabian Rieder, Zeki Amdouni and Silvan Widmer. Breel Embolo got a lot of applause from the crowd when he was substituted out after playing a game. There was a moment for Switzerland when Fabian Rieder missed a very easy shot but it did not matter in the end. The last 15 minutes of the game were very quiet with a few cheers and groans from the crowd as Switzerland easily won the game.
What’s Next
The win means Switzerland will play in the Round of 16 against the winner of the Colombia-Ghana game which will also be in Vancouver. For Algeria the World Cup is over. They go home after a game where they could not score as well as they wanted to. Switzerlands win is an example of how good their coach Murat Yakin is, at planning games. They handled the pressure used Algerias mistakes and controlled the game when it mattered most.
